A Word of Caution

The mystics and the sages have often described their own ability to sense the invisible. However, a great many also offer a word of caution about these capacities. They warn that it is possible to become overly fascinated by these powers and lose our way on the spiritual path if we are not careful. For example, people who spend their effort on developing their psychic abilities without simultaneously developing compassion, intellect, emotional maturity, and personal responsibility may become preoccupied with their own achievement and, ultimately, destructive toward their own and others’ spiritual growth. One twelve-year-old girl expressed an especially balanced way of seeing her ability of telepathy. She said, “It’s hard to think what life would be like without it; I’m so used to it. But it’s not the most important thing to me; I’ve got it and so I’ll use it.”

Developing spiritual potential means integrating and balancing all the different parts of oneself. If you are highly intuitive, you can develop your ability but not have a “together life.” It is easy to find folks who are quite psychic, but whose lives are not integrated. If you have sensitivity, it is not so hard to get answers as it is to live by them. In the end, it is never our sheer capacities or our wondrous experiences that determine a spiritual life, it is what we do with them—what we learn and how we live—that is the measure of our spirituality. Profound events may be important milestones on our journey, and intuitive capacities may be a powerful and, misunderstood way of knowing, but they become out of balance if not guided by love and wisdom. As so many of the sages and mystics have warned, any human power—physical, intellectual, intuitive—may ultimately be destructive if not guided by the energy of the heart.

By the way, here we are only touching the tip of the iceberg of children’s inner knowing and of this multidimensional realm. I have been talking with children who demonstrate remarkable capacities for healing, describe complex technology that does not currently exist, claim to see fairies, describe lives on other planets, talk with God, and have all sorts of other remarkable experiences. Especially with children, there are more things in heaven and earth than we have dreamt of. Our task as parents and friends is to respect and try to understand what and how children see, and, most especially, to encourage them instead of judging them.
